A play about sadness, love, and the power of words
"My grandfather owned a bar, and every night he would come back telling stories he'd just experienced with his customers. I suppose that's where my desire to write this play was born.
Los Yugoslavos deals with one of the issues that most persistently concern me: what we do with words and what words do to us.
There are many reasons why, ever since I wrote it, I've wanted to stage The Yugoslavs. The most important: I care about its characters.
Juan Mayorga
About the play
In The Yugoslavs, it all begins when a waiter asks for help from a customer whom he has seen lift another customer's spirits with words. What the waiter begs this stranger is to speak to his wife, who seems to be sinking into sadness and silence. The waiter hopes the customer will discover the saving words he can't find for his wife.
She, in turn, walks through the city with map in hand, looking for a place they call The Yugoslavs, perhaps another bar where people who share in common the fact that they were born in a country that no longer exists gather. Until a girl offers him, in exchange for hers, another map.
The Yugoslavs is a play about love, sadness, the search for a place, and hope in words. Its characters are two men exchanging words and two women exchanging maps.
