ABOUT A STREETCAR NAMED DESIRE
A Streetcar Named Desire is one of the pinnacles of North American playwriting, an unquestionable text without which it is impossible to understand 20th-century theater. “Streetcar” is as rich and powerful today as it was when it premiered more than seventy-five years ago. Very few works have stood the test of time so well, and I can't think of any other performance that remains so vivid in the memories of audiences around the world.

Arthur Miller, a great admirer of the text, once said that “in Tennessee Williams, American theater discovered, perhaps for the first time, eloquence and intensity of feeling.” Nothing seems more apt to describe what we encounter in that small New Orleans apartment where two worlds as different as those represented by Blanche Dubois and Stanley Kowalski collide in a brutal way.

Making this play is an immense challenge that I approach with the greatest enthusiasm and, at the same time, with the utmost respect. My priority as a director has always been to serve the story and the actors, and having a masterpiece like “Streetcar” in my hands will be even more so. My intention is to distance myself as much as possible from the film adaptation, both in the staging and the acting. The film is very present in the audience's memories, and the smartest thing we can do is to distance ourselves from it and find our own way to tell this fascinating story.

Elia Kazan, the film's first director, said it was "a perfect play; the only thing you have to do to direct it well is to cast good actors." I'm not so sure it's that simple, but I certainly have good actors. Oh, I do. Nathalie Poza, Pablo Derqui, María Vázquez, Jorge Usón, Carmen Barrantes, Rómulo Assereto, Mario Alonso, and Carlos Carracedo are much more than a dream cast; they are some of the most brilliant actors in our country. What's more, they are joined by the best artistic team one could have, with whom I have worked on many occasions. For all of us, this is a very special project, a unique opportunity we have been dreaming about for a long time.
