THE PLAY
“The Miser” is one of Molière's masterpieces and one of his last texts. A comedy based on “Aulularia” (or “The Comedy of the Pot”) by Plautus, its protagonist is Harpagon, a rich and mean individual. This old man lives terrified by an obsessive fear: that the trunk where he has hidden his treasure will be stolen. He distrusts everyone, even his children... The plot takes place in Paris. The original French names have been changed in some of the characters. Leonor (daughter of the miser) is in love with Froilán, a young man in the service of her father as a caretaker, and Cleanto (son of Harpagon) wants to marry Belisa, a young woman who lives with her mother on the verge of being evicted... by the miser himself.
The play shows the meanest and most selfish side of human beings, where the problems generated by money and power are taken to the extreme, which is unfortunately very relevant today. At the same time, Harpagon's mistreatment of his employees and his exacerbated sexism are perceived.
DIRECTOR'S NOTES
The production is in the style of a musical, which, together with the fact that the protagonist is played by an actress, will be two key contributions in the adaptation by Atalaya, as well as the escape from the classical setting and the presence of the actors throughout the performance in choral mode.
In this comedy, money is all-powerful, like a god, the god of that miserable religion of which Harpagon is the officiant and the one that has the most followers in our days. In this comedy, everyone spies on everyone, that's why the doors are closed, open, half-open... sometimes impassable walls and sometimes bars of a brothel. Sometimes threatening artifacts, platforms that spin vertiginously and other times, tombs, prison or gallows. In any case, the character of Harpagon is one of the greats in the Baroque and universal theater for its folds within its apparent monolithism. His famous monologue when his treasure disappears is among the great tragicomic exercises for an actor.
CRITICS HAVE SAID:
Alfonso Crespo, ABC (*****) “ ‘Avaro’ critical, happy, reflective, refined, high rhythm, supernatural at times, choreographic fusion of bodies and scenic elements from which to envelop the audience's gaze”
Auténtico Teatro. Madrid. Carmen Cabia (*****). “Masterful work. Magnificent scenery. Round proposal in the form of a musical. Superb Carmen Gallardo and magnificent the rest of the cast. Great costumes. A TEN. Essential!“
EL PAIS. Madrid. Javier Vallejo: “The Atalaya performers, directed by Ricardo Iniesta, do a formidable choral work. Carmen Gallardo offers an outstanding version, raw and tender. She has the lively rhythm, the range of movement and the biomechanics that characterize Atalaya's acting style. It is glorious to hear them sing”
Diario Crítico. Madrid. José Miguel Villa “Atalaya is brave, daring, festive, provocative, innovative and young. Carmen Gallardo is outstanding as always. The other actors and actresses are brilliant. Humorous, fun, hilarious and acidic staging. And this version is truly masterful. Not to be missed!”
