Russian Red returns to Gran Canaria with a new album, singing in Spanish and proving that her ability to move listeners is still intact.
The appearance of Russian Red in the mid-2000s on the Spanish music scene caused a tsunami in the national independent scene that was unknown until then. The combination of innate talent for composing, privileged voice and natural charisma of Lourdes Hernández did not go unnoticed by almost anyone. After a time performing in venues in the capital and presence on social networks -MySpace, at that time-, Lourdes Hernández debuted with an album entitled I Love Your Glasses (Eureka, 2008) that is already part of Spanish pop history.
The immediate and unusual success of that debut album, which included immortal songs such as Cigarettes, No Past Land, Walls Are Tired or They Don’t Believe, led her to a long tour, countless articles in the press and a total connection with the public. For her second album, the bet was doubled: she signed with Sony Music and recorded in Scotland with Tony Doogan, producer of the first works of Belle And Sebastian (some members of the Scottish group also participated in the sessions). The result was called Fuerteventura (2011) and it fulfilled the artistic and impact expectations placed on it. The album underlined and amplified the virtues already pointed out in its predecessor: ease in finding memorable melodies, stylistic breadth and class and emotion on all sides. Cuts like The Sun The Trees, I Hate You But I Love You or the title track that gave the group its name speak for themselves.
Lourdes' international journey was a fact: tours all over the planet, opening doors never before opened and being a true pioneer in the musical export of Spain to the world. All these experiences were condensed in Agent Cooper (2013), her third full-length, which also coincided with a move to Los Angeles. The LP was produced by Joe Chiccarelli, known for his work with U2, The Strokes and Spoon, among others. Received enthusiastically by critics and audiences, in a certain sense it was the end of a stage, as would be demonstrated later.
In 2017, her latest album to date was released: Karaoke, a self-released mini album in which she reinvented some of the songs she most liked to sing in karaoke bars in the United States. It was the confirmation of another relationship with music, freer, at her own pace, making collaborations when she felt like it (Casero, Zahara, Daniel Anderson) and, in general, focusing on other artistic and personal interests. Her career as an actress, started in 2015 with the short film El beso, has led her to star in Ramona, a film directed by Andrea Bagney (2022) and the Netflix series Un cuento perfecta (2023). This year, after a period without new music, Lourdes has begun to share songs that will soon be compiled into an eight-track mini-LP. These pieces once again show the particular imagination of the singer from Madrid, proving that her ability to move the listener remains intact. Using Spanish for the first time, her creations display lyrics of enormous evocation, mysterious atmospheres and melodies of tremulous beauty. A new twist for one of the most fascinating and surprising artists to have ever come out of Spain.
