Following the success of Afortunadas (2023), the Symphonic Band of the Villa de Ingenio Musical Society returns to the Alfredo Kraus Auditorium with LEYENDAS CANARIAS; a compilation of the compositional vision of four Canarian composers based on various legends, romances, legendary stories and elements of the mythology of the islands, using the symphonic band format as a common thread. Álvaro Díaz, José Buceta, Carlos Vega and Álvaro Lorente have written original works that will be premiered in what is a determined commitment to contribute to the sound legacy of the Music Bands in the Canary Islands. An opportunity to delight in the music composed and performed by today's Canarian talent.
ATLÁNTIDA
Álvaro Díaz
It focuses on the vision of the Canary Islands from the Greco-Latin world, the subject of some of the best-known legends and myths in history. Specifically, we focus on the myth of Atlantis, that gigantic territory inhabited by a superior society and which disappeared, after an earthquake, in the depths of the vast Atlantic Ocean. Are the islands the visible peaks of this territory that lies beneath the sea?
THE DUEL
José Buceta
It is a work inspired by the cultural and emotional richness of the Canarian romance that bears the same title and is set in the town of Ingenio (Gran Canaria). Through a deeply human narrative, the work explores the internal struggle that we all face when deciding between what is right and what is convenient, facing our deepest fears. The plot takes place in a context that mixes tradition and the present, where local legends and universal conflicts intertwine. The main characters, inhabitants of Ingenio, are caught in a conflict that not only puts their values at stake, but also their ability to reconcile with themselves and with those around them.
THE DEVIL OF TIMANFAYA
Carlos Vega
Through the symbiosis between traditional Canarian music, specifically that of Lanzarote, and academic music, the piece explores the drama of this eternal legend, inviting us to immerse ourselves in the tragedy of love as a cruel reminder that human life takes place on the margins of the incontestable power of nature, sometimes sublime and other times, destructive. The work aims to transport the listener into the plot and invite him to recognize the essence, transformed into music, of an amazing land, as real as it is legendary.
LEGEND OF LAURINAGA
Álvaro Lorente
In the 15th century, Don Pedro Fernández de Saavedra, lord of the island and known for his reputation as a womanizer, married Constanza Sarmiento, with whom he had fourteen legitimate children and others born from his extramarital affairs. Among them was Don Luis, who also used to seduce indigenous women until he became obsessed with a young woman named Fernanda. One afternoon Don Luis tried to embrace her, but Fernanda resisted and began to scream. Her screams attracted an indigenous farmer who ran to her aid. Enraged, Don Luis drew his knife, but the farmer managed to snatch it away just as Don Pedro arrived. Upon witnessing the scene, Don Pedro attacked the farmer with his horse, killing him.
From between the trees then emerged Laurinaga, the elderly mother of the deceased farmer. She recognized Don Pedro as the man who had seduced her years before and revealed that the young man she had just killed was her own son. Laurinaga invoked the Guanche gods and cast a curse on Fuerteventura. According to legend, at that moment scorching winds from the Sahara began to blow, laden with dust, which withered the flowers and transformed the island into a desert.
