Romain Pilon/Jeff Denson Trio will perform at El Rincón del Jazz. This extraordinary trio sounds like contemporary jazz, of unquestionable quality, with a palette of multiple influences that goes from Wayne Shorter to Miles Davis, passing through Zeppelin, Hendrix or Satie. An exceptional evening!
The French guitarist Romain Pilon and the American bassist Jeff Denson met 20 years ago at Berklee College of Music. At that time, starting from the common taste for adventure and the love of jazz without preconceived ideas, they starred in various jam sessions. Then, each from their own side of the Atlantic, they have developed brilliant careers that have included the recording of numerous albums as leaders and collaborations with some of the best jazz players in the world: Lee Konitz, Joe Lovano, Ben Wendel, Jeff Ballard or Brian Blade. After a remarkable first album together and around 60 concerts in the United States, they come to the Alfredo Kraus Auditorium to present their new work, 'Finding Light'. The trio is completed on drums by the fantastic Fred Pasqua, a musician born in Montpellier who has been one of the main animators of the Parisian jazz scene for years.
Romain Pilon
Described by Jazzwise magazine as "a brilliant improviser", French guitarist and composer Romain Pilon has built up a solid reputation in the world of jazz guitar over the years. He began playing the instrument at the age of ten, exploring all kinds of music during high school before attending the conservatory and eventually obtaining a scholarship to the Berklee College of Music in Boston. His time at this school culminated in a concert opening for Pat Metheny, as a representative of the guitar department and its more than 1000 students.
He then spent a year in New York, where he participated in numerous jam sessions and toured jazz clubs every night.
In 2004, he decided to settle in Paris. His love of jazz in all its forms, his personal style and his ability to listen make him a much sought-after accompanist. He has shared the stage with such eclectic artists as Christian Scott, Peter Bernstein, Keyon Harrold, Stephane Belmondo, Linda May Han Oh, Sam Yahel, Sylvain Luc, Will Vinson, Marc Copland, Pierre de Bethmann, Clarence Penn and many more. Pilon has recorded five albums as co-leader and five as leader: 'NY3', 'Colorfield', 'The Magic Eye', 'Copper' and the most recent, 'Falling Grace', in collaboration with some of the world's greatest musicians: Ben Wendel, Walter Smith III, Jeff Ballard, Seamus Blake, Matt Brewer...
For these recordings, the guitarist received a warm welcome from the French and international press. Jazz Times magazine in the US wrote: "Pilon glides through the music with a superb sense of confidence."
In 2018, acclaimed bassist Jeff Denson asked him to co-lead a trio with legendary drummer Brian Blade as a guest. His two recordings 'Between Two Worlds' and 'Finding Light' led the guitarist to perform in nearly forty cities across the US.
In addition to his career as a musician, Romain Pilon is an esteemed educator. He has given numerous master classes and workshops at some of the most prestigious colleges and conservatories in the United States, Austria, Portugal, Italy, Spain, Germany, Slovenia, the Netherlands, Malta, France...
With over twenty years of experience, he has taught hundreds of students privately, many of whom are now respected musicians.
