A world-famous figure: the great Hilary Hahn is coming to the Festival for the first time. She will be at the 41st FIMC to perform an essential piece of the violin repertoire: the Mendelssohn Concerto. This will mark the beginning of the programme of the Munich Philharmonic under the direction of Lahav Shani. In the second part of this concert, the orchestra will perform Bruckner's Symphony No. 9, an unfinished work by the Austrian composer.
It was founded in 1893. Mahler conducted the orchestra in the world premieres of his Symphonies Nos. 4 and 8, and in 1911 Bruno Walter conducted the world premiere of The Song of the Earth. Ferdinand Löwe established the orchestra's Brucknerian tradition, which was perpetuated by Siegmund von Hausegger and Oswald von Kabasta.
During the era of Rudolf Kempe (1967-1976), it made its first tour to what was then the USSR. The legendary Bruckner Concerts under chief conductor Sergiu Celibidache contributed greatly to the orchestra's international reputation. Zubin Mehta was appointed the orchestra's first honorary conductor. On the occasion of the centenary of the premiere of Mahler's Symphony No. 8 in Munich, the then chief conductor, Christian Thielemann, conducted two performances of this work. He was succeeded as chief conductor by Lorin Maazel, who held the post until his death in 2014.
