As the final touch to the XXXII Zarzuela Season of the Canary Islands, the title ‘Al compás de Zarzuela’ is the most prominent to reflect the year in which this lyrical genre is declared ‘Representative Manifestation of Intangible Cultural Heritage’ by the Council of Ministers.
In a lyrical Gala in concert version, the Symphony Hall of the Alfredo Kraus Auditorium will be transformed to present 16 passages from the best zarzuelas of the 20th century, offered by the Gran Canaria Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Rafael Sánchez-Araña.
A gala starring the soprano Leonor Bonilla who, among other recognitions, has received the public awards at the VI Alfredo Kraus International Singing Competition; Plácido Domingo for Best Spanish Singer in the Viñas Competition; Teatro de la Zarzuela for Best Zarzuela Singer, Ópera Actual 2019 and Ópera XXI 2020 for Best New Singer.
She is accompanied on stage by mezzo-soprano Sandra Ferrández, with extensive experience under the direction of the best orchestra conductors in the main Spanish theatres, as well as at the Opera Royal de Wallonie in Liège, the Gran Teatro Nacional in Lima, the Washington National Opera, the Teatro de la Zarzuela and the Teatro Real in Madrid; the Tenerife tenor Airam Hernández, with an outstanding participation in numerous vocal competitions, being a finalist in the Francisco Viñas International Singing Competition in Barcelona and a semi-finalist in Plácido Domingo's Operalia in Los Angeles; and the baritone Javier Franco, recognised as one of the best Spanish baritones of today, also awarded in international competitions such as the Viñas in Barcelona, the Francisco Alonso in Madrid or the Rocca delle Macie in Siena (Italy). They will perform the Prelude to 'La alegría de la huerta' by Federico Chueca, Canción del Ruiseñor from 'Doña Francisquita' by Amadeus Vives, or Madrileña Bonita from 'La del manojo de rosas' by Pablo Sorozábal, among 13 other mythical passages from the 20th century in the lyrical genre.
The Canary Islands Zarzuela Season is promoted by the Canarian Friends of Zarzuela, together with the Las Palmas Symphony Orchestra, the Gran Canaria Philharmonic Orchestra and the Las Palmas de Gran Canaria Municipal Symphony Band.
