Three sisters meet in La Palma to share a family inheritance. They collect almonds, share memories and also argue, bringing old family conflicts to the surface. But what is the point of fighting over land that could end up buried by the volcano?
Canarian director Macu Machín will present her film before the screening
“La Hojarasca is a film about ghosts, unexpected encounters and family reconciliations. It deals with two ways of understanding the world from the confines of the metropolis: my own uprooted point of view, through which I decide to tell the story of my family to understand my own roots; and that of the women in my family, who are not interested in trivial facts such as the history of their city, or even the origin of their family, but who relate better to the supernatural.
The women in my family find it difficult to express their most intimate feelings, to relate to the world around them. The hard life in the countryside hardened them like the bark of trees and their children had to learn from their silences. Origin, memory, roots. Our heritage is in their hands and it is up to me to build my story with what remains of my ancestors and those of others persecuted after the Spanish Civil War who rest in the mountains surrounding our house.
My intention is not to seek answers, but to accept their lack, to enter fully into the legitimate realm of stories where the memory of our ancestors invariably flows. I have woven my memory with the threads of fiction and reality, to form a seamless tapestry where dream and reality coexist naturally.”

MACU MACHIN
(Las Palmas de Gran Canaria) has a long career as a short film maker. In his evolution as a filmmaker, he has moved from observational cinema (Geometría de invierno) to found footage (Quemar las naves), always with a concern for capturing the real and the transcendent at the same time (El mar inmóvil). With the production of El Viaje Films, he now faces La hojarasca, his first feature film focused on the unique universe of his own family.
