Celebrating 20 years of musical excellence, Tingvall Trio comes to El Rincón del Jazz, within the framework of Jazz Otoño 2024, to present its ninth album 'Birds'. This trio, composed of Martin Tingvall (piano), Omar Rodriguez Calvo (double bass) and Jürgen Spiegel (drums) has left an indelible mark on the world of jazz.
In 2023, Tingvall Trio celebrated 20 years together as a band. Alongside Martin Tingvall on the piano, who gave the trio its name, we have Omar Rodriguez Calvo on the double bass and Jürgen Spiegel in his field of drums and percussion.
These three musicians have managed to write a success story over the years that is hard to match: multiple ECHO JAZZ awards as an ensemble and Live Act of the Year, a total of six Jazz Awards in Gold, two Impala Awards for international sales, a number of albums at No. 1 in the jazz charts and four times with high rankings in the German Top 100 Albums charts. In the world of German jazz, “outstanding” is the word that comes to mind. With ‘Birds’, this evolution now reaches its tentative zenith.
Martin Tingvall explains the title: “As the name suggests, the album ‘Birds’ is dedicated to them, the birds. They are nature’s musicians. They envelop us with their music day in and day out and can be incredibly inspiring. You just have to listen carefully. Unfortunately, we don’t seem to do that very often anymore. Too many sounds surround us and distract us. I hope that this album can be an incentive to perceive the environment around us differently. Personally, I can already see changes in the behaviour of birds that come from global warming. SOS, it’s time to stop for a moment, listen to nature and take action.”
As always, Martin Tingvall is responsible for all the compositions, but in terms of the arrangements and vocals, the pieces were jointly developed by the trio in rehearsals and concerts until they were “ready to record”. And naturally, there are catchy tracks on this album once again, such as ‘Woodpecker’, ‘Hummingbird’ or ‘Air Guitar’. Wonderful ballads such as ‘The Day After’, with Omar Rodriguez Calvo showing off his bowing prowess on the double bass, alternate with melodies such as ‘Africa’, whose lightness instantly enters the ear canals. ‘SOS’, the call for help to finally provide our planet Earth with a prospect of survival, offers the Tingvall Trio sound at its best and a moving composition to boot. With his solo piece entitled 'Call For Peace', Martin Tingvall concludes by contributing a particularly introverted moment.
The trio will present many of the new pieces on an extensive European tour 2023/24, which will gain momentum in June with two major festival appearances: the ELBJAZZ Festival in Hamburg and Nils Landgren's JazzBaltica in Timmendorf.
Don't miss the chance to experience this exceptional trio live, redefining contemporary jazz with every note. Join the celebration and be enveloped by the magic of the Tingvall Trio!
