This is an interdisciplinary stage proposal that is articulated from the reflection on otherness and how the mechanisms of exclusion and discrimination are constructed on three levels: identity, sexual orientation and ethnic origins.
Recommended age: Over 14 years old
Duration: 70 minutes
In the hold of a ship that does the Indies race, a fairground charlatan, Gaspar de Caravallo, and a Moor condemned to galleys whose tongue has been cut out, Cristóbal, seal an agreement: to join as an artistic couple and entertain the crew in exchange for food and trinkets. But during the eight days of the first stage of the journey, the rehearsal of their first performance leads to an exchange of biographical experiences that tell us about the tragic price of being different and dissident in a world that is cruel to any hint of heterodoxy, of freedom. The arrival at the bay of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, their first stop, will be the only and, perhaps, last possibility of escape.
This fable is based on very heterogeneous materials: the inquisitorial trials for sodomy, the history of the “wild man” of Tenerife, the persecution of free thought in 17th century Europe, the need for farce in order to tell the truth. In the suffocating microcosm of the hold of a galleon, a mirror of that Europe that sets sail ready for colonial plunder, Gaspar and Cristóbal survive on the leftovers of the sailors and their imagination. But with the radical awareness of the dispossessed, of the declassed of then and now, they will face their particular process of emancipation.
