Eliane's musical talents began to manifest themselves at an early age. She began studying piano at the age of seven and by the age of 12 she was already transcribing solos by the great jazz masters.
By the age of 15, she was already teaching piano and improvisation at one of the most prestigious music schools in Brazil, her country of origin.
Her career as a performer began there at the age of 17, working with Brazilian singer-songwriter Toquinho and the great poet Vinicius de Moraes, who was also co-author and lyricist for Antonio Carlos Jobim.
In 1981, she moved to New York and, in 1982, landed a spot in the critically acclaimed group Steps Ahead. Her first solo album was a collaboration with Randy Brecker titled Amanda (1984) and in 1986 Eliane signed with Blue Note Records.
