Historical clarinet trio
Mayrhofer Trio:
Eric Hoeprich, Kayo Nishida and Alejandro Fariña, bassetto horn and chalumeaux
Mayrhofer Trio is an ensemble specializing in the performance of music from the second half of the 18th century with historical clarinets, bassetto horn and chalumeaux under the criteria of HIPP (Historical Informed Performance Practice).
The group is led by Eric Hoeprich, founder of the Orchestra of the 18th Century with Franz Bruggen, and one of the most relevant figures of the historical clarinet in the panorama of early music. Kayo Nishida and Alejandro Fariña follow in their maestro's footsteps by collaborating with the most important early music groups on the European scene.
Since the Mayrhofer trio was created in 2023, it has performed at the Santander Early Music Festival and the concert cycles organised by the Reyes Barlet Cultural Association in Puerto de la Cruz (Tenerife).
Concert
“This proposal is based on offering the listener the opportunity to get to know a somewhat peculiar instrument, which is not very popular these days, but which was popular in central Europe during the second half of the 18th century, especially in Vienna. At that time and place, the bassetto horn trio was established as a concert option, specifically it could be heard regularly in the chamber halls of the palaces of the aristocracy and of a small bourgeoisie that was beginning to emerge.
The bassetto horn was an instrument that fascinated W. A. Mozart. The possibility of reaching lower notes than the clarinet, together with the warmth of its sound, led Mozart to include it in many of his compositions, both orchestral and chamber music. Specifically, for the bassoon trio he composed 25 pieces that were published posthumously in 1803, structured as 5 divertimenti with 5 movements each, of which two are included in the program. In addition, the program also includes arrangements from that period of some of the most important arias from his operas. This is because not all courts or aristocracy had enough economic power to program operas or contemporary music of that time. The most immediate and economical solution was to arrange or adapt that music for smaller and less expensive groups or ensembles such as, for example, the bassoon trio. Finally, duets originally for two horns that were arranged at that time for two bassoons are included.” MT
