Songs, glosses and fantasies of the Spanish Renaissance.
Spanish Renaissance music, both vocal and instrumental, is undoubtedly the true summit of the history of Spanish music and one of the greatest milestones of our culture. Many Hispanic musicians served in the main European courts and chapels, rubbed shoulders with the best composers from other nations and had their books printed in the best music presses, especially in Venice, Seville and Rome. Connecting with medieval tradition, the compositions contained in the great songbooks of the late 15th century and editions of the 16th century were fundamentally guided by the utmost respect for the text: a careful counterpoint to enhance with the music what the words suggest at each moment. In this program we will take a tour focused primarily on the 16th century, starting with one of the songbooks from the late 15th century: Cancionero de Palacio, Cancionero de Upsala and moving forward in time with collections from the 16th century such as: “Tratado de glosas” by Diego Ortiz, “El Delfin” by Luys de Narváez, Música para clave harp o vihuela by Antonio de Cabezón and beautiful vocal pieces by Juan del Encina, Josquin des Prés and Tomás Luis de Victoria among others.
