MEMORY CYCLE TIME, MEMORY IN TIME
Cultural Heritage is not only a reminder of cultural wealth, but also a testimony of human diversity and creativity. Protecting and disseminating it implies safeguarding collective memory, promoting respect and understanding between generations. For this reason, the Canarian Institute of Cultural Development (ICDC) organizes, for the second year and through its Cultural Heritage Unit, the cycle Time of memory, memory in time, composed of a series of cinematographic projections that aim to transmit experiences, beliefs, customs, values, principles, knowledge and events from the past.
TABOO (1931)
Original title: A Story of the South Seas Country: United States Director: F.W. Murnau Screenplay: F.W. Murnau and Robert J. Flaherty Photography:  Floyd Crosby and Robert J. Flaherty Music: Hugo Reisenfeld Performers: Matahi, Anne Chevalier, Bill Bambridge, Hitu, Ah Fong, Jules, Mahao Duration: 90 minutes B/W Silent
Synopsis: Filmed in Tahiti and Bora-Bora, it tells the story of lovers faced with the rites and taboos of Polynesia, against the backdrop of colonization, indigenous culture and the fight against social restrictions. Murnau, known for his stunning work on “Nosferatu,” challenges himself in directing this extremely beautiful film. Black and white photography captures the exuberance and majesty of Polynesian landscapes. “Tabú” also stands out for its focus on social and political issues of the time. Murnau uses the love story of the main characters as a metaphor to explore colonial oppression and cultural resistance. The choice of real locations adds authenticity to the plot and immerses the viewer in a world of wild beauty.
